In this chapter the Republicans are gathering in Chicago to elect their candidancy for the presidency of the United States. The book actually focuses on Abraham Lincoln and the three men who would be leading candidates to gain the Republican nomination. William Seward, Salmon Chase, and Edward Bates are the names of the other three "rivals". Although Lincoln is considered not to be the all time favorite person to be nominee for the Republican Party, he is nominated. What actions did Lincoln take to win the nomination? Was it his leadership? What plans were used?

Lincoln was elected because he had an enormous amount of emotional strength that was far more important his lack of political experience. He knew how to reach the emotions of the people. When Lincoln met with a person,he made it seem that only two people were in the room. This a leadership skill that all principals should possess.
ReplyDeleteIn Malcolm Gladwell's "The Tipping Point" he calls these people salesmen. Not with the bad connotations we often connect to salesmen, but instead a person who instantly connects with the other people in the room. He talks about a study where they watched a conversation between people, where the speed is slowed down and the volume is muted, and notice that after time the people start moving in a way that they appear connected. He says it's like a dance...but obviously we don't notice this happening. Salesmen are the leaders of this dance and people instantly join in.
